The convergence
Software-defined vehicles are, at their core, connected computers on wheels. That means every OEM is now a licensee of cellular SEPs (4G, 5G, and soon 5G-Advanced), Wi-Fi, and V2X standards. The traditional automotive supply chain is not set up for SEP licensing at this scale.
What OEMs should do
Three things: (1) map your product's compliance to specific 3GPP releases and identify the SEP declarations that read on you; (2) build an internal FRAND rate model so you are not negotiating in the dark; (3) evaluate whether to license at the component level (via the Avanci pool or bilaterally) or the vehicle level.
